Which one would you choose? (manual transmissions of course).
As I was driving home from work today, and concentrating on not grinding 3rd gear with a worn out synchro, I had a thought. If the transmission on my ‘05 Focus takes a crap and were to leave me with only one functioning gear, which one would I want? With some experimenting, I decided on 3rd. I can get it going from a stop without too much slipping, it is flexible enough to be comfortable in a good range of in town speeds, and in a pinch I could manage short distances on the freeway in the slow lane.
What would be your one-speed choice and why?

Third, the M3 will move off the line no problem in third and will go all the way to 90 in that gear, 70 mph is like 6K-ish

Mine’s only a 3 speed, so I guess 3rd for me

3rd if I’m spending most of my time driving on the highway.
2nd if life is spent doing more city driving.

Depends on the car. If it can take off in 3rd well enough then that’s what I’d go with. If not, 2nd would have to do.

Only one gear?

The second to highest gear. I don’t really like driving spiritedly more so that nice range between 2000-3000 where it’s like power on demand without any noise.
I literally sound like the most boring person on Oppo.

In the 1994 Spanish Grand Prix Michael Schumacher’s Benetton was stuck in 5th gear, and he still managed a 2nd place finish. So considering I wouldn’t be driving an F1 car, maybe 4th?

2nd. just because you can start some cars from a stop in 3rd doesn’t mean you should (if you value the life of your clutch and bottom end), and almost all cars are guaranteed to hit 60MPH in 2nd, as that allows journalists testing 0-60 times to only have to do one shift.

If you have a Z06, 5th gear, but I’m sure 4th would manage just fine too. Haha.

Well, Senna won a race while the gearbox on his MP4/6 was stuck in sixth! I mean it was raining and he did pass out on the podium but I think for a road car I'd stick with third gear.

Depends on the vehicle, but probably whichever is closest to 1:1.
